What's it all about?

Well, no photo, but I’m thirtysomething, British by passport (but in my heart feel a strange mix of English, Italian and Kazakh), male, single and a TEFL teacher currently working in Kazakhstan. The potential, and indeed likely, lack of global interest in any website I design or maintain has not terminally perturbed me, so here is my creative pixel-based assault on the sensibilities of anybody who would dare to consider leaving the Home Counties to teach our Anglo-Saxon Latin dialect to speakers of other languages. And I recommend very much that you do.
The site's developed recently, and my original intention of it being a TEFL site has moved aside a bit as I start to feel increasingly guilty about other features of my life being left out. I am more than just a teacher, why not put some other stuff on? So I got to it.
If you have any suggestions, drop me a line.

SITE UPDATES - 4 September 2010

It’s a cliche I know, but until science can tell us which of chicken and egg made it into the world first we’re stuck with it. And similarly, few people know which order to approach literary success in. Does being known bring success as a writer, or does success as a writer get you known? Eager to prove the latter, but ever wary of the influence of the former, I approached this work with a certain degree of confusion, which, sadly, delayed its commencement by about five years. Not a period in which, I add, I made any inroads into solving the quandary the other way either. Most of the dreams of my late twenties have packed their bags by now leaving me strangely Buddhist in my desire to be famous, and consequently rather few people know I exist.

SGW Rocks

I have no web design experience and very little inclination to get any. But when SGW came along it didn’t matter, it is a simple but very powerful tool for creating great websites with the minimum of fuss. I honestly couldn't praise it highly enough.
The Self-Generating Website
They do say everybody remembers their teachers. So if it’s true, I’m lucky enough therefore to be famous, infamous, or just a passing occasional memory after all for well over a thousand people by now, all of whom bar a few exceptions have touched my life in positive ways I hope to exploit en route, I hope, to selling a few books. Must make a note to write them first.

This site is easy to use and very easy to update, so my only excuse for slow development is the fact that I am probably planning lessons, running, eating mountains of rice or waiting for a tram.
For the time being, the site will be organised around stories and photos of my teaching and travelling. There's a page for each country, one for general teaching info and one with links to some other things I've written. Also a lot more information about the things I have come to value in life, music, places, people and a bit of TV.
The best way to approach this is to divide by country, not entirely in-keeping with the idea of global togetherness but then neither is the World Cup and I was only too happy to take sides then. It has been argued that any life which lists as its highlight victory in a mere football match has been sadly devoid of any true worth, but I challenge anybody to show me anything else that rouses such pride and happiness on such a large scale. And I saw it twice, three times even...

Kazakhstan Rules!

This website was started in November 2008, although I don't remember the exact date. Let's call it the 15th. A year on, it's about 60% complete but there's no ultimate finishing line. And as teachers in my position can find work in every corner of the globe, I plan to have a few more pages to add yet.
Where do I fancy working next? Montenegro, Japan, Peru, Latvia, Georgia, Armenia, Malaysia or back to Italy?
Wherever it is, it feels good to breathe air as free as this.

Other languages

One of the benefits of TEFL is that, those who make the effort, get to learn a few other languages themselves. Well, I won't say I ever made much effort, but I did OK. Here is some of the evidence.
Please note that the contents of these pages may not display in some browsers.
I also speak French and Arabic, but won't be including them on the site, in the case of Arabic only because I have no access to Arabic script on my PC (and because I only speak moderate Egyptian Arabic, which is an unwritten language).
